## About Andermatt-Sedrun

Andermatt sits at 1,444 m in the Urseren valley, at the crossroads of the Gotthard, Furka and Oberalp passes — a garrison and staging post for centuries rather than a resort, with a reputation among skiers for two things: the Gemsstock, and the amount of snow it gets. That changed in the 2010s, when an Egyptian developer rebuilt the empty barracks land into a new quarter of hotels and apartments, and the ski area was joined by a chain of new lifts to Sedrun and then Disentis in Graubünden. Since 2022 Vail Resorts has owned a majority of the lift company.

The result is a linked area of around 180 km that changes character as you go. The Gemsstock, at 2,961 m straight above the village, is a high, north-facing mountain that holds its snow for weeks and is famous for its freeride: the marked pistes are steep, the open faces steeper, and it draws serious skiers whenever there is fresh snow. Across the valley, the Nätschen–Gütsch side faces the sun and has the gentle terrain, and from there the lifts run over the Oberalp pass into the wide, quiet slopes above Sedrun and on to Disentis.

Andermatt is still small, and still a place where a heavy snowfall can close the passes and leave the village very quiet indeed.

## Where lessons start

Lessons for beginners and children belong on the Nätschen side, across the valley from the Gemsstock: sunny, gentle, with a proper beginner area at the mid-station and easy blues running down towards the village. The slopes above Sedrun are similarly wide and calm and make a good second step. Andermatt is a split personality — one of the best mountains in the Alps for freeriders and advanced skiers, and, since the new lifts, a perfectly good one for families — but the two halves are on opposite sides of the valley, and it pays to tell your instructor which one you are after.

## Getting there

Andermatt is the easiest serious ski mountain to reach from Zurich by train: about an hour and three-quarters, changing at Göschenen on the Gotthard line onto the short rack railway that climbs through the Schöllenen gorge in ten minutes. Lucerne is about an hour and a half. The Oberalp pass road closes in winter, but the Matterhorn Gotthard railway keeps running over it to Sedrun and Disentis, and a car shuttle carries vehicles through. By road, Zurich is around an hour and a half via the Gotthard motorway.

### Is the Gemsstock suitable for intermediates?

For a strong, confident intermediate on a good day, yes: the marked pistes from the top are steep reds and blacks rather than cliffs, and the snow is usually better than anywhere else in the valley. For a cautious one, no — the mountain has few easy options once you are up there, and in flat light the open upper slopes are disorienting. Spend the first day on the Nätschen side, then take the Gemsstock with an instructor before doing it alone.
