## About Bad Gastein

Bad Gastein is unlike any other Austrian ski resort: a 19th-century spa town of grand hotels stacked up the sides of a gorge, with a waterfall crashing through the middle and a faded, slightly theatrical air that people either find romantic or unsettling. The radon-rich thermal springs that made it fashionable for emperors and composers still fill the baths, and a soak after skiing is part of the deal here.

The skiing is spread through the Gastein valley in several separate areas, all on one pass and all part of Ski amadé. From Bad Gastein itself a gondola climbs the Stubnerkogel to 2,246 m — with a suspension bridge across the summit ridge — and links via the Angertal to the Schlossalm above Bad Hofgastein, the largest connected piece. The Graukogel across the valley is a small, old-fashioned mountain of tree-lined reds and blacks that keeps its snow. At the head of the valley, Sportgastein is a high, open bowl reaching 2,700 m, the snow-sure and freeride part, reached by a toll road and bus.

The town's layout is the awkward part: steep streets, stairs and a station at the top, with the lifts a bus ride from most hotels. It rewards people who like character over convenience.

## Where lessons start

Bad Gastein itself has little gentle terrain at town level. The best beginner slopes in the valley are in the Angertal, the sunny hollow between the Stubnerkogel and the Schlossalm, and above Bad Hofgastein, which is flatter and better set up for a first week. A beginner is honestly better based in Bad Hofgastein or Dorfgastein and visiting Bad Gastein for the baths. The valley's strength is for intermediates and advanced skiers who like variety and long tree-lined runs, and for freeriders with a guide at Sportgastein.

## Getting there

Bad Gastein is on the Tauern railway, with direct trains from Salzburg in about an hour and a half and through services from Munich and Vienna — the station is at the top of the town. Salzburg airport is around an hour and twenty minutes by road. The catch is inside the town: steep streets, limited parking and a walk or bus between the hotels, the station and the gondola, which matters more with skis on your shoulder than it sounds.

### Are the Gastein ski areas linked?

Partly. Stubnerkogel and Schlossalm are linked by piste and lift through the Angertal, and that is where most people spend most of their week. The Graukogel, Sportgastein and Dorfgastein-Großarl are separate and reached by the free ski bus, which runs to a timetable and gets full at the end of the day. Plan each day around one area rather than expecting to hop between them.
