## About Bansko

Bansko is an old town of stone houses and churches at about 925 m, at the foot of the Pirin, and since the early 2000s it has become Bulgaria's largest ski resort. The ski area lies inside Pirin National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and is run under a concession; it has hosted Alpine World Cup races since 2009.

Everything starts with the gondola. Opened in 2003, it runs for about 6.2 km from the edge of town at 990 m, by way of a mid-station at Chalin Valog, to Banderishka Polyana at about 1,600 m, the hub of the ski area, in roughly half an hour. Above it, chairlifts fan out to Shiligarnika, Plato and up to Todorka, below the 2,746 m peak, for about 75 km of pistes, much of it on snowmaking, and more than 1,500 m of vertical from the top lifts down to town, where two ski roads bring the day to an end.

The gondola is also Bansko's bottleneck. On busy mornings in high season the queue at the bottom is long; it is shortest before the lifts open and again from late morning, and there is a road up to Banderishka Polyana, with very little parking at the top.

## Where lessons start

Lessons meet at Banderishka Polyana, at the top of the gondola, where conveyor belts and gentle practice slopes serve first days; allow for the ride up, about half an hour, and for the morning queue. The blue runs of Shiligarnika are the natural next step, and the steep black Tomba, by the Banderitsa chairlift, is for much later.

## Getting there

Sofia airport is about 160 km away, two and a half to three hours by road, and most visitors arrive by airport transfer. Buses from Sofia take around three hours. The gondola station is at the edge of town, within walking distance of many hotels.

## Frequently asked questions

### How do you avoid the gondola queue in Bansko?

Be in the line before the lifts open, around 8 am, with your pass already bought, or go up later: the queue usually thins from late morning. Ski school groups and season-pass holders often get priority. On a busy day, agree the meeting time with your instructor allowing for both the queue and the ride of about half an hour to Banderishka Polyana.

### Is Bansko good for beginners?

Yes, once you are up the mountain. About three-fifths of the pistes are easy, and Banderishka Polyana, at the top of the gondola, has conveyor belts and gentle practice slopes. The catch is getting there: a lesson at a fixed hour has to allow for the gondola ride and, in high season, the morning queue.
