## About Cerro Catedral

Cerro Catedral, above Bariloche in northern Patagonia, is the largest ski resort in South America: around 120 km of pistes, a genuine resort village at the base, and views over the Nahuel Huapi lake that would justify the trip on their own.

The mountain takes its name from the cathedral-like rock spires along its ridge, and the terrain below them runs from wide beginner slopes at the base through long intermediate cruising to genuinely serious off-piste on the far side. It is the resort most visitors to Argentina start with, and for good reason: it has the size, the variety and the infrastructure.

Bariloche itself is a real city of 100,000 people, with restaurants, chocolate shops and something to do when the weather closes in — which in Patagonia it does.

## Where lessons start

The base area has broad, well-separated beginner terrain and it is where almost every first lesson happens. Because Bariloche is a city rather than a purpose-built village, many visitors stay in town and drive up — allow for the 20 km each way when agreeing a lesson time with your instructor.

## Getting there

Bariloche airport has direct flights from Buenos Aires (about two hours) and the resort is 20 km from the city. The season runs mid-June to early October, peaking in late July and August — this is the Southern Hemisphere, so its winter is the northern summer.

## Frequently asked questions

### Bariloche or Las Leñas?

Bariloche and Cerro Catedral for the larger, more varied ski area plus an actual city with restaurants and things to do when it snows sideways. Las Leñas is a purpose-built base under a much more demanding mountain — go for the steep terrain, not the après. Beginners and families are better served here.

### When are the busiest weeks in Bariloche?

The Argentine winter school holidays in July, when Bariloche in particular fills with graduation trips, and the first half of August when Northern Hemisphere visitors arrive. September is the quiet reward: longer days, softer snow, far fewer people and instructors with time.
