## About Chamonix Mont-Blanc

Chamonix is not really a ski resort. It is a mountain town with five separate ski areas around it — Grands Montets, Brévent, Flégère, Les Houches and Le Tour — none of them linked on snow, all of them reached by bus or train along the valley floor. Skiers arriving with a Trois Vallées mental model spend their first day confused.

What it has instead is the most serious lift-served terrain in the Alps. The Aiguille du Midi cable car climbs to 3,842 m and opens the Vallée Blanche, a 20 km glacier descent that is not a piste, is not patrolled, and should never be skied without a guide. Grands Montets is a legendary off-piste mountain. The valley sits directly under Mont Blanc, and the scale of it is genuinely difficult to photograph.

For a first week on snow, this is the wrong place — and an instructor here will tell you so. For everything after that, it is one of the great mountains of the world.

## Where lessons start

Les Houches is where lessons for beginners and families actually happen: it is lower, wooded, gentler and a world away from the intimidation of Grands Montets. Le Tour at the top of the valley is the other genuinely friendly sector. Ask your instructor which area suits the day — in Chamonix that question matters more than anywhere, because the five mountains face different ways and the bus timetable is part of the plan.

## Getting there

Geneva is about an hour and a quarter and is the obvious airport; shared transfers run constantly. There is also a train up the valley from Saint-Gervais, and a free bus network between the villages once you are there, which means Chamonix works without a car better than most Alpine resorts.

### Can I ski the Vallée Blanche without a guide?

No. It is a glacier: it has crevasses, the route changes through the season, and the exposed ridge you descend on foot from the Aiguille du Midi to start it has killed people. It is not a piste and it is not patrolled. Go with a qualified mountain guide, roped for the ridge, with the right equipment. Instructors here will arrange it or tell you honestly that your level is not there yet.

### Is Chamonix good for beginners?

Only if you learn at Les Houches or Le Tour and accept that most of the valley's terrain is not for you yet. The famous sectors are steep, the areas are not linked, and the logistics eat time. A first-timer will have a better week in La Plagne or Les Gets for less money.
