## About Formigal

Formigal spreads across four valleys at the head of the Tena Valley, and its size is the first thing people underestimate: it is one of the largest ski areas in Spain, and crossing it end to end takes most of a morning.

Its other advantage is position. Sitting right on the French border in the western Pyrenees, it takes the full force of the Atlantic fronts that come in off the Bay of Biscay, and in a normal winter it records more snow than anywhere else in Spain. The trade-off is weather: the same fronts bring wind and flat light, and the upper lifts close more often than at Baqueira.

The Sextas sector is the beginner heartland — wide, gentle and separate — and it is one of the best places in the Pyrenees to put a family with mixed levels on snow.

## Where lessons start

Sextas is where beginners belong: a broad, sunny area with easy lifts and enough room that a first lesson is not spent dodging traffic. Intermediates and above usually start from Sarrios or Anayet, which open onto the linked valleys. Agree the sector with your instructor beforehand — Formigal is long, and starting in the wrong valley costs a lift chain.

## Getting there

Zaragoza is the closest useful airport at about two and a half hours, with Pau just over the French border a similar distance. Huesca and Jaca are the nearest towns of any size. The road up the Tena Valley is straightforward but exposed near the top; chains are worth having in the boot from January onwards.

Teaching for payment in Spain requires the Técnico Deportivo en Deportes de Invierno (TD1/TD2/TD3), issued by Ministerio de Educación / comunidad autónoma.

### Is Formigal or Baqueira better?

Formigal is cheaper and usually snowier; Baqueira is better groomed and better organised, with a stronger resort village. For a first week with a family, Formigal's Sextas area and lower prices make a strong case. For a week of serious skiing where you want the lifts to run every day, Baqueira wins.

### Why do the lifts close so often at Formigal?

Wind. The resort sits on the border ridge and takes the Atlantic fronts first, which is where its snow comes from and also why the exposed upper lifts stop. The lower sectors normally keep running, so a local instructor who knows which valley is sheltered that day is worth the money.
