## About Grandvalira

Grandvalira is the largest ski area in southern Europe: six sectors running from Encamp and Canillo through Soldeu and El Tarter up to Pas de la Casa on the French border, around 210 km of pistes on one pass.

Its reputation as a cheap party mountain is a decade out of date. The lift network has been substantially rebuilt, and Soldeu has hosted Alpine Ski World Cup finals — the men's and women's races finished the season here — which is not something a resort gets to do with mediocre snowmaking or slapdash piste preparation.

What has not changed is the value. Lessons, lift passes and food all cost noticeably less than the equivalent in the French Alps, which is why Grandvalira is one of the best places in Europe to take a family with mixed abilities for a week.

## Where lessons start

Soldeu and El Tarter hold the best learning terrain: wide, well-pitched greens and blues, reached by gondola from the valley so beginners start above the village rather than on it. Pas de la Casa is higher and snowier but also windier and busier with day traffic from France — it is the wrong place for a first morning.

## Getting there

Andorra has no airport. Barcelona is about three hours and Toulouse about three and a half, both by road, and coach transfers run from each. There are border posts on both approaches and they do check documents, so carry a passport or national ID. The currency is the euro even though Andorra is outside the EU.

## Frequently asked questions

### Which Grandvalira sector should I stay in?

Soldeu or El Tarter for a family or a first week: best learning terrain, quieter, and the villages are pleasant. Pas de la Casa for the highest, most snow-sure skiing and the cheapest accommodation, accepting that it is a functional border town with a lot of nightlife. Encamp is the budget option with a long gondola into the system.

### Are lessons cheaper in Andorra than in France?

Yes, noticeably. A private hour in Grandvalira typically runs €40–65 against €50–90 in the Tarentaise, and the gap widens over the February holidays. Instruction is still a regulated profession here: Andorra requires an official title issued by the Govern d'Andorra.
