## About Kühtai

Kühtai is the highest ski village in Austria at 2,020 m, a cluster of hotels on a mountain pass between the Sellrain and Ötz valleys, west of Innsbruck. It is small — around 45 km of piste rising to about 2,500 m — and there is nothing here but the hotels, the lifts and the snow, which is entirely the point.

The altitude buys a season from early December into April with a reliability no resort at conventional Austrian village height can match, and because the pistes run right past the hotel doors, everything is ski-in ski-out. The slopes are mostly open, treeless and of moderate steepness, with a handful of reds that are steeper than they look, and there are floodlit evenings on some pistes during the week.

It is quiet, cold and windy when the weather is bad, and a week here is a week of the same forty-five kilometres. That suits families and short breaks; anyone who wants variety uses the regional pass to visit Innsbruck's other areas or the neighbouring Hochoetz, which shares a ticket but not a lift link.

## Where lessons start

The nursery slopes are in the middle of the village between the hotels, at 2,000 m, which means a child can be watched from a hotel window and the snow underfoot is reliable all season. The step up to the easy blues is short and obvious. Kühtai works well for a family's first week or a weekend from Innsbruck; the altitude makes the first day harder than it would be lower down, so pace it.

## Getting there

Innsbruck airport is roughly 45 minutes by road, and there is a regular bus from Innsbruck's main station. Munich is about two and a half hours. The approach from the Innsbruck side is a mountain road that climbs a thousand metres and is properly wintry: cleared, but a car without winter tyres and chains in the boot has no business on it in a storm.

For a family with young children or a beginner, yes — you will not run out of gentle terrain. For a confident intermediate, three or four days is about right before the pistes feel familiar.
