## About Macugnaga

Macugnaga sits directly beneath the east face of Monte Rosa, a wall of ice and rock 2,600 m high that is routinely described as the only Himalayan-scale face in the Alps. Standing in the village and looking up at it is the reason to come.

The village itself is Walser, with wooden houses and a church whose lime tree is said to be seven hundred years old. The skiing is modest; the setting is not.

Quiet and small, fine for a first week, with an outlook few resorts anywhere can match. Freeriders come for the terrain under the face.
