## About Méribel

Méribel occupies the middle valley of the Trois Vallées, which is its practical advantage: from here both Courchevel and Val Thorens are a manageable morning, and you can ski the whole 600 km area without an epic commute at either end of the day.

Unlike its purpose-built neighbours, Méribel was designed with a building code requiring wood and stone, so it looks like a mountain village rather than a car park with beds. The terrain is mostly intermediate — long, well-pitched blues and reds through the trees, which is the kind of skiing that makes a whole group happy.

## Where lessons start

Méribel-Mottaret, higher up the valley, has the more snow-sure learning terrain and is the better base if there is a beginner in the group. The tree-lined runs are a real asset on a bad-weather day: while Val Thorens is a white room, Méribel still has definition.

## Getting there

Chambéry around two hours, Geneva around three, or the train to Moûtiers and a 45-minute bus. Méribel is the shortest transfer of the three valleys from Moûtiers, which matters on a changeover Saturday.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is Méribel a good base for skiing the whole Trois Vallées?

Yes — it is the best-placed of the three. From the middle valley both Courchevel and Val Thorens are a manageable morning away, so you can reach the whole 600 km area without a long commute at either end of the day. Just leave time to get back before the link lifts close in the afternoon.

### Where should a beginner stay in Méribel?

Méribel-Mottaret, higher up the valley, has the more snow-sure learning terrain and is the better base if someone in the group is starting out. The tree-lined runs lower down are a real help on a grey day, when Val Thorens above is a white room.
