## About Nendaz

Nendaz is the quieter, cheaper way into the 4 Vallées. Haute-Nendaz sits at around 1,350 m on a south-facing hillside above Sion, mostly apartments and chalets rather than hotels, and a gondola climbs to Tracouet at 2,200 m, a sunny plateau with the resort's easiest skiing and a view across the Rhône valley.

From Tracouet the pistes drop to Siviez, the crossroads of the whole system: one way leads to Veysonnaz and Thyon, the other to Tortin, the Col des Gentianes and Mont Fort at 3,330 m, the highest point of the area. On paper Nendaz has the same 400 km as Verbier; in practice you spend a fair amount of the day on connecting lifts, so pick your sector in the morning rather than trying to do it all.

The village is known for its bisses, the old irrigation channels that thread the hillside and make good walking in winter, and for having a lot of sun and relatively little nightlife.

## Where lessons start

Tracouet is where lessons start: a broad, sunny plateau at the top of the gondola with gentle slopes and a nursery area, well away from the through-traffic of the link. Nendaz suits families and people learning at their own pace, and it costs less than Verbier for the same pass. What it lacks is a beginner slope at village level — the first day means riding the gondola up and down, which is easy enough but worth knowing.

## Getting there

Sion is twenty minutes below by road, with buses up to the village, and it is on the main Valais railway line — Geneva is around two hours by train to Sion, Zurich about two and a half via Bern. By car, Geneva airport is a little under two hours. Because Nendaz is a spread-out village on a hillside, check where your accommodation is relative to the gondola: some of it is a walk or a shuttle away.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is it realistic to ski Mont Fort from Nendaz?

Yes, and it is one of the best days in the 4 Vallées: gondola to Tracouet, down to Siviez, up to Tortin and the Col des Gentianes, then the cable car to the top. The way back is the catch — the standard return from Gentianes is the Tortin itinéraire, an unpisted mogul slope, and the alternative involves timing the last lifts carefully. A confident intermediate can do it; a nervous one should go with an instructor.
