## About Niseko United

Niseko gets its snow from a genuinely unusual mechanism. Cold, dry air sweeps off the Siberian landmass, crosses the relatively warm Sea of Japan picking up moisture, and hits the mountains of Hokkaido, where it dumps that moisture as exceptionally light, dry snow — and does it again, and again, all winter. Niseko regularly records fifteen metres or more in a season.

Niseko United is four interconnected resorts on the flanks of Mt Niseko Annupuri: Grand Hirafu, Hanazono, Niseko Village and Annupuri. The skiing is largely below the treeline through widely spaced birch, which is the ideal medium for deep snow — visibility stays workable when it is snowing hard, which here is most days. Across the valley, Mt Yotei sits as a near-perfect volcanic cone.

The resort runs a controlled backcountry gate system: numbered gates open and close daily according to avalanche conditions, and the rules are enforced.

## Where lessons start

Hanazono is the quietest of the four and has the best beginner terrain and the terrain park. Annupuri is the gentlest overall and the most local in feel. Grand Hirafu is the largest and busiest, with most of the accommodation and nightlife at its base.

Worth booking an instructor even if you already ski well: deep snow is a genuinely different skill from piste skiing, and plenty of competent piste skiers find their first powder day frustrating. A couple of hours learning how to stand on skis in deep snow changes the whole trip.

## Getting there

New Chitose airport in Sapporo is about two and a half hours by road, with frequent bus transfers. Domestic flights from Tokyo take an hour and a half. The four sectors are linked on one pass and by shuttle, so a car is not necessary once you are there.

### When is the best time to ski Niseko?

January, without much argument: the coldest, snowiest month and the one that produces the conditions Japan is famous for. February is nearly as good and slightly less crowded after the New Year rush. March brings sunshine and stable weather but the snow starts to lose the lightness that is the whole point of coming.

Numbered gates on the resort boundary, opened or closed each day depending on avalanche conditions. Passing through an open gate means leaving patrolled terrain with full responsibility for yourself.
