## About Portillo

Portillo is unlike anywhere else in skiing. There is no village — there is one yellow hotel on the shore of the Laguna del Inca, no through traffic, and a week-long all-inclusive format where guests arrive on Saturday and leave on Saturday.

It has drawn national ski teams for their off-season training since the 1960s, and the reason is the terrain: compact but steep, high, and with couloirs that hold cold snow. Two of its lifts are the extraordinary va et vient anchor-cable slingshots, which exist because the avalanche-prone slopes they serve cannot support a normal chairlift — you ride four abreast and get launched up the hill.

It sits on the main road between Santiago and Mendoza, which is the only reason it is reachable at all.

## Where lessons start

The all-inclusive week means instruction is often bundled, but an independent instructor is worth it for the same reason as everywhere: you pick the person. The mountain is small enough to know in a day, and what an instructor adds here is reading the couloirs — which are the point of the place and are genuinely serious.

## Getting there

About two hours north of Santiago on the road to Argentina, near the Cristo Redentor border crossing. That road is a main international route and closes in heavy snow, which is worth knowing when planning arrival day.

## Frequently asked questions

### How does the Portillo week work?

Guests arrive on Saturday and leave on Saturday, staying in the one yellow hotel on the shore of the Laguna del Inca with meals and lift pass bundled — there is no village and no through traffic. Instruction is often part of the package, but an independent instructor is still worth booking for the same reason as anywhere: you choose the person. The mountain is small enough to know in a day; what an instructor adds is reading the couloirs.

### Is Portillo suitable for beginners?

Not really — it is a mountain for strong skiers. The terrain is compact but steep and high, national teams train here for that reason, and the famous va et vient slingshot lifts serve slopes a beginner cannot use. A first week is far better spent at El Colorado or Valle Nevado, an hour from Santiago. Come to Portillo once you already ski steep groomed runs with confidence.
