## About Sierra de Béjar - La Covatilla

La Covatilla sits high above Béjar in the western reaches of the Central System, and it is the only ski resort in the province of Salamanca. The terrain is open and treeless, spread across a broad shoulder above the town.

It is a long way from the famous mountains and it makes no claim to compete with them. It is the snow for a large stretch of western Spain and Portugal's border regions, and on a good cold week it works well.

## Where lessons start

Wide open slopes give plenty of room for a first lesson, with the usual caveat of treeless terrain: on a flat-light day there is nothing to read the ground against.

## Getting there

Salamanca is around an hour, Madrid about two and a half. The road climbs from Béjar.

## Instructors at Sierra de Béjar - La Covatilla

## Qualifications required in Spain

Teaching for payment in Spain requires the Técnico Deportivo en Deportes de Invierno (TD1/TD2/TD3), issued by Ministerio de Educación / comunidad autónoma.

## Frequently asked questions

### When is there snow at La Covatilla?

January and February are the safest months, and always after a cold spell. The resort sits high above Béjar on open, treeless ground, which holds snow well when it is cold but has nothing to shelter it from sun or wind. Check the conditions on the morning and pick a clear day if you are learning: with no trees, flat light gives a beginner nothing to read the ground against. Salamanca is about an hour.
