## About Whistler Blackcomb

Whistler Blackcomb is the largest ski resort in North America: two mountains joined at altitude by the Peak 2 Peak gondola, which spans 4.4 km between them and holds the record for the longest unsupported lift span in the world.

It hosted the alpine events of the 2010 Winter Olympics, and gets around 11 metres of snow a season off the Pacific. That snow is maritime — deep and heavy rather than light and dry — and at village level, 675 m up, it can rain. That is the honest cost of the volume.

The upside is scale and variety: alpine bowls above the treeline, reliable tree skiing below, and some of the largest beginner infrastructure anywhere. The pedestrian village at the base is genuinely well designed, which is not something every big resort manages.

## Where lessons start

Both mountains have enormous, well-designed beginner areas, and the only real complication is the size of the place — which is exactly what an instructor solves on day one. If it is raining in the village, the answer is to go up: the snow line often sits a few hundred metres above the base, and a local instructor knows where it is that morning.

## Getting there

Vancouver is about two hours up the Sea to Sky Highway, one of the most scenic approaches to any ski resort, with frequent coach transfers from the airport. No car is needed once you arrive — the village is pedestrian and the lifts start from it.
