France has more skiable terrain than any other country on earth, and the numbers stop being meaningful somewhere around the Trois Vallées — six hundred kilometres of linked pistes above Courchevel, Méribel and Val Thorens, the highest resort in Europe. Add Paradiski, the Portes du Soleil, the Grand Massif and Chamonix, and a single lift pass can cover more mountain than most skiers see in a decade.

Size is exactly why people underestimate what an instructor is for here. In a domain this large, the difference between a good week and a frustrating one is usually not technique — it is knowing which valley holds the snow after a warm spell, which face to ski at two in the afternoon, and how to get across a resort like Val d'Isère without spending an hour queueing. A local instructor sells you their map of the mountain as much as their teaching.

France also regulates the profession more strictly than almost anywhere. Teaching skiing for payment without the diplôme d'État and a valid carte professionnelle is a criminal offence, not an administrative one. Every certified instructor on Alpine Pal has had their qualification checked, and the public register is linked on each profile so you can check it yourself.

## The terrain

The Tarentaise valley in Savoie is the heart of it: the Trois Vallées, Paradiski (Les Arcs and La Plagne), Tignes and Val d'Isère, all high, snow-sure and built for volume. Haute-Savoie is the other pole — Chamonix for mountaineering-grade terrain under Mont Blanc, the Portes du Soleil straddling the Swiss border, Flaine and the Grand Massif. The Hautes-Alpes around Serre Chevalier and Briançon are sunnier and quieter for the same money. And then there is everything people forget France has: the Hautes-Pyrénées, the Jura, the Vosges and the volcanoes of the Massif Central, all cheaper, smaller and considerably less intimidating for a first season.

## When to go

The high Savoie resorts open around late November and run to early May; Tignes and Val Thorens are the last to close. Lower resorts in the Pyrenees, Jura and Vosges have a shorter, more weather-dependent window from mid-December to late March. The weeks to avoid, or to book very early for, are the February school holidays — France staggers them across three zones, so peak crowding rolls through the Alps for most of the month. Late January and mid-March are the value weeks.

## Qualifications required

A regulated profession: the Professional card (diplôme d'État de ski) is required, issued by Ministère des Sports.

## Frequently asked questions

### How much does a private ski lesson cost in France?

Expect roughly €50 to €90 per hour for a private lesson, with the Tarentaise resorts — Courchevel, Val d'Isère, Méribel — at the top of that range and the Pyrenees, Jura and Vosges noticeably below it. Rates climb over the February school holidays and Christmas. Each instructor on Alpine Pal sets and publishes their own hourly rate, and nothing is added on top at checkout.

### Is it legal to teach skiing in France without a diploma?

No. France requires the diplôme d'État de ski and a valid carte professionnelle to teach for payment, and doing so without one is a criminal offence — this applies to foreign instructors working in France too. Because of that, Alpine Pal does not offer the informal 'companion' option in France at all: every instructor you can book here is a qualified professional, and their card can be checked on the Ministère des Sports public register.

### Which French resort is best for beginners?

La Plagne and Les Gets are perennial recommendations — plenty of gentle, well-connected green terrain and lifts that do not force a beginner onto something steep to get home. Avoid starting in Val d'Isère or Chamonix: both are superb mountains and both have beginner areas, but the resort layout punishes anyone who cannot yet ski a blue with confidence.

### Can I book an English or Spanish speaking instructor in France?

Yes. English is widely spoken by French instructors, particularly in the big international resorts of the Tarentaise, Chamonix and the Portes du Soleil. Spanish is less common but present, especially in the Pyrenean resorts near the Spanish border. Every profile lists the languages the instructor can teach in, and you can filter by them.

### When should I book for the February school holidays?

As early as you can — two months ahead is not excessive. The French February holidays run in three staggered zones and effectively fill the Alps for four consecutive weeks, and instructors in the major resorts are the first thing to sell out. If your dates are fixed and fall in that window, book the instructor before you book anything else.

### Do instructors in France teach off-piste and freeride?

Many do, and France is one of the best places in the world for it — Chamonix, Tignes, Val d'Isère and La Grave in particular. Instructor profiles state their disciplines and experience, and off-piste sessions are usually agreed directly with the instructor through the chat beforehand, since conditions and avalanche risk decide what is actually sensible on the day.
