About Arosa Lenzerheide
For decades Arosa and Lenzerheide were two resorts a valley apart, each looking at the other across the Urden gap. In 2014 a cable car was strung across it, and the result is the largest linked ski area in Graubünden: around 225 km of pistes on both sides of the Rothorn at 2,865 m, sunny, mostly red and blue, and shared between two villages with very different characters.
Arosa, at 1,800 m, sits in a bowl at the dead end of the Schanfigg valley, reached by a spectacular hour-long train ride from Chur that climbs more than a thousand metres. It is compact, quiet and family-minded, with its lakes, its walking trails and a long tradition of children's ski weeks. Lenzerheide, at 1,500 m on the road to the Julier pass, is more spread out and easier to reach, strung along the Heidsee lake, and has become a serious Nordic centre — its biathlon arena hosted the World Championships in 2025.
Neither is a hard mountain. What they offer is space, sun and long, well-groomed runs.

Where lessons start
Both villages have nursery slopes at village level, and Arosa in particular has built its reputation on children's lessons — the gentle terrain around Innerarosa is sheltered, sunny and close to the hotels. Lenzerheide's beginner areas are spread along the valley, so check which is closest to where you are staying. This is one of the friendliest areas in Switzerland for a first or second ski week and for families; intermediates get plenty of mileage over the Urden link, and the Rothorn side has enough steep pitches to keep an advanced skier honest for a couple of days.

Getting there
Both start from Chur, about an hour and a quarter from Zurich by train. From there Arosa is an hour by the Rhaetian Railway, a narrow-gauge line that leaves from the street in front of Chur station and climbs through tunnels and over viaducts to the end of the valley; the road follows a similar route with a great many bends. Lenzerheide is around half an hour by bus or car from Chur on the main road towards the Julier pass, which makes it the easier of the two for a weekend.
Qualifications required in Switzerland
Teaching skiing or snowboarding for payment in Switzerland is a regulated profession: an instructor must hold the Snowsports instructor diploma. Instructors listed as certified on Alpine Pal have either sent theirs to us for review or are vouched for by the ski school that invited them.

Is the link between Arosa and Lenzerheide worth using every day?
Not every day. The Urden cable car crosses in a few minutes, but reaching it from either village means a couple of lifts first, and coming back late means a tight chain of connections — miss the last one and it is a taxi round by road through Chur. Do the crossing on a clear day as a full-day outing, and spend the other days on your own side, which in both cases has more than enough terrain for a week.
