Switzerland invented the winter holiday. In the 1860s a St. Moritz hotelier bet a group of English summer guests that they would enjoy the Alps in winter, and the industry that followed built almost everything the sport now takes for granted — the mountain railway, the resort village, the ski school itself.

Zermatt is the clearest expression of it. The village has been car-free for over a century, the Matterhorn stands at the head of the valley in a shape so particular it became the template for how a mountain is drawn, and the lift system climbs to 3,883 metres at the Matterhorn glacier paradise, the highest in Europe. It is the one place on the continent where you can ski every month of the year, and where a summer training session and a January lesson happen on the same glacier.

Switzerland requires an official diploma to teach snowsports for payment, awarded through Swiss Snowsports. Standards are exacting and the qualification takes years. Certified instructors on Alpine Pal have had theirs reviewed before their profile went live.

The terrain

Swiss skiing is high: the Valais resorts sit under 4,000 m peaks, with Zermatt and Saas-Fee on glaciers and Verbier at the heart of the 4 Vallées, the largest linked area in the country and the Alps' freeride reference. Graubünden is the sunny, dry east — the Engadin around St. Moritz, the six areas of Davos Klosters, the parks of Laax — and the Bernese Oberland puts the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau above the pistes of Grindelwald, Wengen and Mürren. A lot of it is car-free: Zermatt, Saas-Fee, Mürren, Wengen and the Aletsch villages are reached by train or cable car, which shapes the first morning of any lesson.

When to go

The main season runs from early December to mid April, longer in the high resorts: Zermatt and Saas-Fee open in late November and ski into May, and the Zermatt glacier stays open through the summer. Christmas, New Year and the February half-terms are the expensive, crowded weeks. Switzerland is unusually easy to reach by train — Zurich and Geneva airports have their own railway stations — and many resorts are quicker by rail than by road.
