Hannes Schneider began codifying a progression there before the First World War — the idea that a beginner should be taken through a defined sequence of movements rather than simply pointed downhill — and the Arlberg technique spread from St. Anton to every ski school in the world. When your instructor breaks a turn into stages, that lineage is what they are working from.
St. Anton itself has never been a gentle mountain. It is the resort of choice for strong skiers who want long, demanding descents and some of the most consistently good lift-served off-piste in the Alps, and its après-ski is famous enough to be a reason people come and a reason others stay away. The Arlberg lift network links it with St. Christoph, Stuben, Zürs and Lech into one of the largest connected ski areas in Austria.
Austria requires a Skilehrer qualification, issued through the regional Landesskilehrerverband, to teach for payment. Certified instructors on Alpine Pal have had theirs reviewed.

The terrain
The Galzig and Rendl sectors above St. Anton give long, sustained descents with serious vertical, and the terrain between the marked pistes is what the resort is really known for — the Valluga and the runs down to Stuben in particular. There is a beginner area at village level, but it is fair to say St. Anton is not where most people would choose to learn. Lech and Zürs, on the same lift ticket, are markedly gentler and better suited to a first week.
When to go
The Arlberg season runs from early December to late April, and its altitude and position make it one of the snowiest corners of the Eastern Alps. Christmas, New Year and February are packed; late January and the second half of March give you the same mountain with room to move. St. Anton is on the main railway line between Zurich and Innsbruck, which makes it one of the easiest big resorts in the Alps to reach without a car.
