Ski and snowboard instructors in Chile

Chile has a geographical advantage no other ski country can match: you can land in Santiago in the morning and be on a chairlift by lunchtime. The resorts of the Tres Valles — Valle Nevado, El Colorado and La Parva — sit barely an hour up a switchback road from the capital, at altitudes above 3,000 metres, with the dry Andean snow and enormous open bowls that come with them.

An hour and a half north, Portillo is the outlier and the icon: a single yellow hotel on the shore of the Laguna del Inca, no village, no through traffic, and a week-long all-inclusive format that has drawn national ski teams for their off-season training since the 1960s. Further south, the volcanic resorts change the picture entirely — Nevados de Chillán and Corralco ski the flanks of active volcanoes through southern beech forest, with thermal springs at the base and considerably more snow than the central Andes.
