Andorra is a country of 468 square kilometres that somehow contains the largest ski area in southern Europe. Grandvalira alone links six sectors and around 210 kilometres of pistes, and the principality's three resorts sit within forty minutes of each other — you can ski a different mountain every day without changing where you sleep.
Its reputation as a cheap party destination has aged badly, and not in the way people assume: the lift infrastructure has been rebuilt, Grandvalira has hosted Alpine Ski World Cup finals, and the teaching here is a serious business rather than an afterthought. What has stayed true is the value. Lessons, lift passes and accommodation all cost less than the equivalent in the French or Swiss Alps, which makes Andorra one of the best places in Europe to put a whole family on snow for a week.

The terrain
Grandvalira is the giant, running from Encamp and Canillo through Soldeu and El Tarter to Pas de la Casa on the French border — Soldeu's sector is the one with the World Cup pedigree and the best learning terrain. Pal Arinsal above La Massana is two linked, family-oriented sectors with a well-regarded snowpark. Ordino Arcalís is the connoisseur's choice: the snowiest corner of the principality, north-facing, and a regular Freeride World Tour venue.
When to go
The Andorran season runs from early December to mid-April, and the high sectors at Pas de la Casa and Arcalís hold snow well into spring. Peak weeks are Christmas, New Year and the Spanish and French February holidays, when Andorra fills with visitors from Barcelona, Toulouse and Madrid. Weekends are consistently busier than weekdays because of how close the principality is to both — if you can ski Monday to Thursday, the mountain feels like a different place.

How much does a private ski lesson cost in Andorra?
Typically €40 to €65 per hour, which is meaningfully cheaper than the equivalent lesson in the French Alps and one of the main reasons families come here. Rates rise over Christmas and the February holidays. Instructors on Alpine Pal publish their own hourly rate and nothing is added at checkout.
Do instructors in Andorra speak Spanish?
Almost universally. Catalan is the official language of Andorra, and Spanish, French and English are all widely spoken in the resorts given where the visitors come from. Filter the search by language to be certain — profiles list only the languages an instructor can actually teach a lesson in.
Is Andorra a good place to learn to ski?

Do I need a passport or visa for Andorra?
Andorra is not in the European Union or the Schengen Area, but it has no airport and can only be reached overland through Spain or France, so in practice you clear Schengen first. Carry a passport or national ID card — there are border posts on both roads, and they do check. The currency is the euro.
Which Andorran resort has the best snow?
Ordino Arcalís, consistently. It is the highest and most northerly of the three, largely north-facing, and it holds cold snow after a storm longer than anywhere else in the principality — which is exactly why the Freeride World Tour keeps coming back. Pas de la Casa, at the top of Grandvalira, is the next most snow-sure.
