American skiing runs on a different logic to the Alps. Instead of vast linked networks connecting village to village, a US resort is usually one mountain, thoroughly developed, with everything inside its boundary controlled, patrolled and signed — and the terrain outside it treated as a serious undertaking rather than a lunchtime detour. Tree skiing is central in a way it simply is not in Europe, because the mountains here are forested to a much higher elevation.
Aspen Snowmass in Colorado is four separate mountains on one ticket, which is the closest the US comes to European variety. Snowmass is the big one, with the vertical and the family terrain; Aspen Mountain, known locally as Ajax, rises straight out of the town and has no beginner runs at all; Aspen Highlands holds the famous Highland Bowl, hiked rather than lifted; and Buttermilk is the gentle one, and also the home of the Winter X Games.

The terrain
Snowmass carries over 1,300 metres of vertical and the bulk of the intermediate and family terrain. Buttermilk is where beginners should start — genuinely gentle, well-served and separate from the fast traffic. Aspen Mountain is intermediate and above only, which surprises visitors who assume the town's home hill will be the easy one. Aspen Highlands is the connoisseur's mountain, and the Highland Bowl at the top requires a bootpack along an exposed ridge to reach terrain that is emphatically expert-only.
When to go
The Colorado season generally runs from late November to mid-April. The busiest and most expensive stretches are Christmas and New Year, Presidents' Day weekend in February, and spring break in March. Altitude deserves respect here: Aspen's base sits around 2,400 m and the summits are well above 3,300 m, so arriving from sea level and skiing hard on day one is a reliable way to feel terrible on day two.

What certification do US ski instructors have?
There is no government licence. The industry standard is PSIA-AASI certification — the Professional Ski Instructors of America and American Association of Snowboard Instructors — graded Level 1, 2 or 3, with Level 3 being a substantial professional qualification. How much does a private ski lesson cost in the US?
The United States is the most expensive country in the world for ski lessons, and resort ski schools in Aspen commonly charge well over $1,000 for a full private day in peak season. Booking an independent instructor directly is usually considerably cheaper. Each instructor on Alpine Pal publishes their own hourly rate in US dollars.
Which Aspen mountain should a beginner ski?
Buttermilk, without hesitation. It is the gentlest of the four, with long, forgiving green runs and a learning area away from the traffic. Do not start on Aspen Mountain: it has no green runs at all, which is unusual for a resort's namesake hill and catches a lot of visitors out.
Do I need to worry about altitude in Colorado?
Yes, more than most European skiers expect. Aspen's town sits at about 2,400 m, higher than many Alpine summits, and lifts reach past 3,400 m. Give yourself a day to adjust, drink far more water than usual, go easy on alcohol the first night, and tell your instructor you have just flown in — they will pace the lesson around it.
