Canadian skiing spans a continent, and the snow changes with the longitude. On the Pacific coast, Whistler Blackcomb — the largest resort in North America, host of the 2010 Olympic alpine events — gets around 11 metres a season of maritime snow, deep but sometimes wet at village level. Move inland and the air dries out: the BC interior resorts of Sun Peaks, Big White, Revelstoke and Kicking Horse are famous for light, cold powder, with Revelstoke holding the greatest lift-served vertical on the continent. Further east again, Banff Sunshine and Lake Louise sit inside Banff National Park in the Canadian Rockies, colder and drier still, beneath some of the most photographed mountain scenery anywhere.
The east is a different tradition. Mont-Tremblant in Quebec's Laurentians is the flagship of eastern Canadian skiing — smaller mountains, harder snow, and a colourful pedestrian village a 90-minute drive from Montreal, with lessons available in French as naturally as in English.
Canada has no state teaching licence. The recognised credentials are CSIA for skiing and CASI for snowboarding, both graded by level, and both well regarded internationally — a great many instructors working in Europe and Japan trained through them. Alpine Pal shows what each instructor holds.

The terrain
Whistler is the giant — two linked mountains with alpine bowls above the treeline and reliable tree skiing below, plus some of the largest beginner infrastructure anywhere. The interior resorts trade size for snow quality: Revelstoke and Kicking Horse are steep and serious, built around long descents and champagne powder, while Sun Peaks and Big White are gentler, ski-through villages ideal for families and progression. In the Rockies, Lake Louise pairs World Cup pistes with big back bowls and Banff Sunshine spreads friendly high-alpine terrain across the Continental Divide. Tremblant offers classic eastern skiing: shorter, well-groomed runs dropping straight into the village.
When to go
The coast opens first and closes first: Whistler runs from late November to late April, with rain possible at village level as the honest cost of all that maritime snow. The interior and the Rockies are colder and drier — January and February bring serious cold and the lightest powder, and Banff Sunshine regularly spins lifts into late May, the longest non-glacial season in Canada. In the east, Tremblant is reliably cold from December to early April, with snowmaking covering what the sky does not.

What certification do Canadian ski instructors have?
CSIA — the Canadian Ski Instructors' Alliance — for skiing, and CASI for snowboarding, both graded by level. There is no government licence, but these certifications are internationally respected and widely held by instructors working in other countries too. Which Canadian resort is best for beginners?
Whistler has enormous, well-designed beginner areas on both mountains, and its only complication is its size — exactly what an instructor solves on day one. Among the interior resorts, Sun Peaks and Big White are the natural picks: ski-through villages, gentle consistent terrain and forgiving dry snow. In the east, Tremblant's long green runs from the summit make first weeks genuinely enjoyable.
How much does a ski lesson cost in Canada?
Resort ski school privates are expensive — at Whistler comfortably into the hundreds of Canadian dollars for a half day in high season, with Banff and Tremblant not far behind. Should I choose the coast, the interior or the Rockies?
Whistler for sheer scale, variety and the easiest international access via Vancouver — accepting the chance of rain at village level. The interior — Revelstoke, Kicking Horse, Big White, Sun Peaks — for the driest, lightest powder and quieter slopes. The Rockies for scenery and a long, cold season, with Banff town as a base for both Sunshine and Lake Louise. A local instructor is the best shortcut to whichever you pick: they know which aspect holds the best snow that day.
