The season runs from mid-June to early October, and for anyone chasing a second winter — or a first one in the middle of a European July — the Andes are the most accessible serious mountains on the planet.
The skiing is spread over two very different regions. Patagonia holds most of it: Cerro Catedral above Bariloche, the biggest resort in South America, ringed by lakes and araucaria forest, plus Chapelco, Cerro Bayo and La Hoya further down the range. Then there is Las Leñas in Mendoza, a high, dry, serious mountain with a reputation for off-piste terrain that draws professional skiers from the Northern Hemisphere every August. At the far end of the country, Cerro Castor near Ushuaia is the southernmost ski resort in the world.
Argentina does not require a state licence to teach, but the national instructors' association AADIDES certifies professionals, and instructor profiles on Alpine Pal show what qualifications each person actually holds so you can judge for yourself.
The terrain
Cerro Catedral is the one most visitors start with — around 120 km of pistes, a genuine resort village, and views over Nahuel Huapi that are worth the trip on their own. Las Leñas is the opposite proposition: fewer amenities, higher altitude, and the legendary Marte chairlift opening access to steep terrain that only runs when conditions and patrol allow. Chapelco near San Martín de los Andes is the polished family option, Cerro Bayo the compact and friendly one, and Cerro Castor in Tierra del Fuego has the most reliable cold snow in the country thanks to sheer latitude.
When to go
The Argentine season opens around the middle of June and closes in early October, with the most dependable snow through late July and August. The busy weeks are the Argentine winter school holidays in July, when Bariloche in particular fills with graduation trips, and the first half of August when Northern Hemisphere visitors arrive. September is the quiet reward: longer days, softer snow, far fewer people, and instructors with time.
