About Aspen Snowmass
Aspen Snowmass is four separate mountains on one ticket, which is the closest American skiing comes to European variety — though unlike the Alps they do not link on snow, and you move between them by shuttle bus.
Snowmass is the big one, with over 1,300 m of vertical and the bulk of the intermediate and family terrain. Aspen Mountain, known locally as Ajax, rises straight out of the town and famously has no green runs at all, which catches out visitors who assume the resort's namesake hill will be the easy one. Aspen Highlands is the connoisseur's mountain, and its Highland Bowl is reached by a bootpack along an exposed ridge to terrain that is emphatically expert-only. Buttermilk is the gentle one, and also the home of the Winter X Games.
The town below is a former silver-mining settlement that kept its Victorian street grid, which is why it looks like nowhere else in Colorado.

Where lessons start
Buttermilk, without hesitation. It is the gentlest of the four, with long, forgiving green runs and a learning area well away from the traffic. Do not start on Aspen Mountain — there is genuinely nowhere for a beginner to go. Snowmass is the right second step, and the natural base for a family who want everyone on the same hill.

Getting there
Aspen/Pitkin County airport is four miles from town, which is unusually convenient, but it is small and weather-dependent. Denver is about four hours by road over Independence Pass in summer or the longer winter route via Glenwood Springs; Eagle County is around 70 minutes.
Qualifications required in United States

Do I need to worry about altitude in Aspen?
Yes, more than most European skiers expect. The town sits at about 2,400 m — higher than many Alpine summits — and lifts reach past 3,400 m. Give yourself a day to adjust, drink far more water than usual, go easy on alcohol the first night, and tell your instructor you have just flown in: they plan around it constantly.
Why is a private lesson in the US so much more expensive?
The United States is the most expensive country in the world for ski lessons, and resort ski schools in Aspen commonly charge well over $1,000 for a full private day in peak season. Booking an independent instructor directly is usually considerably cheaper, and you get to choose the person rather than being assigned whoever is free.
