Bad Kleinkirchheim is a spa village at 1,100 m in the Nockberge, the range of rounded, grassy summits in the north of Carinthia that looks more like a highland than a piece of the Alps. It has been a thermal resort since the Middle Ages, and the two modern baths — the Römerbad and the St. Kathrein — are as much a part of the day here as the lifts.

The ski area, linked with the neighbouring village of St. Oswald, counts around 100 km of piste between the village and just over 2,000 m at the Kaiserburg, and almost all of it is sunny, tree-lined and of moderate steepness. The exception is the Franz Klammer piste, a World Cup downhill named after Carinthia's greatest skier, who grew up nearby and made it his training ground — a proper black that descends over 1,000 m to the village.

It is a calm, grown-up sort of resort, popular with Austrians, Italians and Slovenes rather than the international crowd, and the balance of a morning on the pistes and an afternoon in hot water suits a lot of people better than they expect. The altitude is modest and it relies on snowmaking, but the Nockberge sit far enough south to catch the Adriatic storms.

Where lessons start

There are nursery slopes at the base of the lifts in both Bad Kleinkirchheim and St. Oswald, and the easy, wide runs on the upper slopes of the Kaiserburg side are a natural progression. The rounded, forgiving terrain of the Nockberge makes this a friendly area for beginners and cautious intermediates, and older learners in particular tend to like the combination of gentle skiing and a thermal bath afterwards.

Getting there

Klagenfurt airport is about an hour by road, Villach around 40 minutes. The nearest railway station is Spittal an der Drau on the Tauern line, with buses to the village in about half an hour. From Munich it is a good four hours and from Vienna about the same, so like the rest of Carinthia it suits people coming from the south or already in the region more than a flight-and-transfer weekend.

Qualifications required in Austria
