Q: Do I need a guide to ski the Laub?

Legally no, sensibly yes, at least the first time. The Laub is an open face of around a thousand metres that is never groomed, never patrolled and prone to avalanche after snowfall; the entry is easy to find and the consequences of getting it wrong are not. A guide or an instructor with local knowledge will read the snow, choose the day and carry the rescue gear, and you will ski it better for it. The same goes, more so, for the Galtiberg and the glacier routes.

Longer than almost anywhere in central Switzerland. The glacier runs are usually skiable into May, with the upper lifts opening in October some years, so Engelberg is one of the standard choices for early- and late-season days from Zurich. The valley runs and Brunni are a different story and depend on a normal winter; by April you are riding down.

Engelberg grew up around a Benedictine monastery founded in 1120 that still runs a school and makes cheese, and the village at 1,000 m keeps that unhurried feel — until you look up. The Titlis, at 3,238 m, rises straight above it, and the lifts climb to just over 3,000 m on its glacier, giving around 2,000 m of vertical in a single line, one of the biggest drops in Switzerland. The top section is the Titlis Rotair, a cable car whose cabin turns a full circle on the way up, and the summit has a suspended cliff walk and a glacier cave for the non-skiers.

The mountain is split in two by the valley. The Titlis side is high, north-facing and serious: the marked pistes are good but the reputation rests on the freeride, with descents such as the Laub — a thousand metres of open, unbroken face — and the Galtiberg, which drops all the way to the valley floor, drawing strong skiers from across Europe on powder days. Across the village, Brunni faces south, gets the sun and has the easy terrain and the sledging.

At around 80 km of pistes it is not large, and it does not need to be: the point is the vertical, the snow and the proximity to Zurich and Lucerne.

Where lessons start

Beginners start on the Klostermatte, the practice slope beside the monastery at village level, and then move either to the sunny, gentle slopes of Brunni or to the broad blues around Trübsee at 1,800 m on the Titlis side. That covers a first week comfortably. But Engelberg is, above all, a mountain for advanced skiers and freeriders: the descents off the Titlis are among the best lift-accessed off-piste in the Alps, and are exactly the sort of terrain to do first with a guide or an instructor who knows them, since they cross glaciated and avalanche-prone ground.

Getting there

This is the big-mountain resort closest to Zurich. Lucerne is about 45 minutes by train on the line that climbs into the valley, Zurich airport a little under two hours by train or around an hour and a quarter by car. The lifts for the Titlis side leave from the edge of the village, a short walk or free shuttle from the station; Brunni is reached by a cable car from the other side. Being this accessible has a cost: weekends and powder days bring a queue from the city.

Qualifications required in Switzerland

Teaching skiing or snowboarding for payment in Switzerland is a regulated profession: an instructor must hold the Snowsports instructor diploma. Instructors listed as certified on Alpine Pal have either sent theirs to us for review or are vouched for by the ski school that invited them.
