About Mürren-Schilthorn
Mürren sits on a ledge at 1,638 m with the Lauterbrunnen valley dropping away below and the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau filling the sky across it — the finest front-row seat in the Bernese Oberland, and one you cannot drive to. The village is car-free, reached by cable car and train from Lauterbrunnen or by cable car from Stechelberg, and small enough that everything is a five-minute walk.
Above it is the Schilthorn at 2,970 m, with the revolving Piz Gloria restaurant on top that starred in the 1969 Bond film On Her Majesty's Secret Service and has been trading on it since. The new Schilthornbahn, completed in 2025, replaced the old cable cars with a direct line from the valley, and its first section from Stechelberg is the steepest cable car in the world. The pistes below the summit are steep, long and north-facing, and the Inferno, run since 1928 from the Schilthorn towards Lauterbrunnen, is the longest amateur ski race in the world at around 15 km.
The ski area is small — around 50 km — but it is on the Jungfrau pass with Grindelwald and Wengen, and it is the part of the region that serious skiers rate highest.

Where lessons start
The gentle terrain is around Allmendhubel, reached by a funicular from the village, and at Winteregg on the way down to Grütschalp — sheltered, sunny slopes that are fine for a first few days, with a small nursery area close to the houses. But Mürren is honestly not a beginners' resort: the area is small, the easy runs are soon used up, and the mountain's character is steep. It is best for intermediates who want to be stretched and for advanced skiers, who get the Schilthorn descents, good off-piste with a guide and the quietest lifts in the Jungfrau region.
Getting there
Take the train to Lauterbrunnen — twenty minutes from Interlaken Ost, about two and a half hours from Zurich — and then either the cable car to Grütschalp and the little train along the ledge, around twenty minutes in all, or the bus to Stechelberg and the Schilthornbahn straight up. Cars stop at Lauterbrunnen or Stechelberg, both of which have car parks. Check which end of the village your accommodation is: the train arrives at one end and the cable car at the other.
Qualifications required in Switzerland
Teaching skiing or snowboarding for payment in Switzerland is a regulated profession: an instructor must hold the Snowsports instructor diploma. Instructors listed as certified on Alpine Pal have either sent theirs to us for review or are vouched for by the ski school that invited them.

How hard is the run down from the Schilthorn?
The top pitch below Piz Gloria is a genuine black, steep and often hard-packed because it faces north and sits at nearly 3,000 m, and it narrows in places. Below Birg the gradient eases and the run to Mürren is a long, rewarding red. A strong intermediate can do it in good conditions; in poor visibility or on an icy morning it is a run to leave for later. Most people ride up for the view and the restaurant regardless of whether they ski down.
