About Scuol
Scuol is the main town of the Lower Engadin, a valley where the street signs are in Romansh, the houses are decorated with sgraffito and the pace is a good deal slower than in St. Moritz an hour upstream. It has been a spa town since the nineteenth century, built on mineral springs, and the modern Bogn Engiadina baths — pools, saunas and a Roman-Irish bath circuit — are the reason a lot of people come here who never put on skis.
The ski area is Motta Naluns, reached by a gondola from beside the railway station. It faces south-west across the valley, so it gets sun for most of the day, and it spreads over open, treeless slopes up to around 2,800 m, with roughly 70 km of pistes and long, satisfying runs back down to Scuol, Ftan and Sent. It is not large and it is not steep, but it is well laid out, rarely crowded and remarkably scenic, with the peaks of the Swiss National Park across the valley.
The town at 1,250 m is a proper place with a life of its own, which in the Swiss Alps is rarer than it sounds.

Where lessons start
The beginner terrain is on the Motta Naluns plateau at the top of the gondola, a broad, sunny shelf at around 2,100 m with gentle slopes and a nursery area — high enough for good snow, and out of the way of the runs coming down from above. There is nothing to learn on in the town itself, so day one starts with the gondola. Scuol is a good fit for families and relaxed intermediates who value sun, space and an afternoon in the baths over sheer scale; anyone chasing steep terrain will be happier elsewhere in the Engadin.
Getting there
Scuol is the end of the Engadin railway line, and there are direct trains from Zurich in around two and three-quarter hours via Landquart and the Vereina tunnel, which is a great deal quicker than the road. The gondola stands a couple of minutes from the station. By car, the Vereina car-shuttle train from Klosters saves the Flüela pass, which is closed in winter; count on around three hours from Zurich either way.
Qualifications required in Switzerland
Teaching skiing or snowboarding for payment in Switzerland is a regulated profession: an instructor must hold the Snowsports instructor diploma. Instructors listed as certified on Alpine Pal have either sent theirs to us for review or are vouched for by the ski school that invited them.

Can I combine Scuol with other Engadin ski areas?
Yes, and it is the sensible way to spend a week here. The train runs up the valley to Zernez and on to the Upper Engadin — Diavolezza, Corvatsch and Corviglia around St. Moritz are about an hour away — and the Samnaun and Ischgl side of the Silvretta is an hour by PostBus in the other direction. Scuol makes a cheaper, calmer base than St. Moritz for people who want to see several mountains rather than one.
