The Stubai glacier is the largest glacier ski area in Austria and, thanks to its position at the head of a valley opening directly onto Innsbruck, the easiest to reach. Lifts run from the car park at Mutterberg (1,750 m) up to around 3,200 m, where a viewing platform called Top of Tyrol looks out over a hundred peaks, and the season runs from early October to early June.

The glacier is served by a proper network of gondolas and chairs rather than the couple of drag lifts many glacier areas make do with, and the pistes are wide, mostly blue and red, and often empty compared with the resorts down in the valley. There is a large terrain park, an ice cave and a run of more than 1,400 m vertical down to the valley station when the lower section is open. In powder it has serious freeride terrain, and the Stubai valley is one of the best ski-touring areas in Tyrol.

What the glacier lacks is a village: the base is a car park with a restaurant. Most visitors stay in Neustift, twenty minutes down the valley, or ski it as a day trip from Innsbruck, and the valley's lower ski areas — Schlick 2000, Elfer and Serles — are on the same pass for days when the glacier is windy.

Where lessons start

The glacier has a large, dedicated family and beginner area around Gamsgarten, the mid-mountain hub at about 2,600 m, with conveyor lifts, a children's restaurant and slopes gentle enough for a first day. Altitude is the thing to think about: 2,600 m is high for a first-timer to be exerting themselves, so take it slowly. It is an excellent choice for a lesson in autumn or late spring when the valley resorts are closed, and for intermediates who want empty pistes and guaranteed snow rather than a village.

Getting there

Innsbruck airport is about 45 minutes by road, and a public bus runs from Innsbruck's main railway station all the way up the valley to the glacier car park in roughly an hour and a quarter. Munich is around two and a half hours. The last stretch of road beyond Neustift is a narrow valley route that is cleared but can be slow after snow, and the car park fills early on sunny weekends in autumn when it is the only skiing around.

Qualifications required in Austria

Should I stay at the glacier or in Innsbruck?

There is nowhere to stay at the glacier itself. The choice is Neustift — a pleasant, real valley village twenty minutes below, with the lower ski areas on its doorstep — or Innsbruck, which gives you a city and access to a dozen other ski areas on the same regional pass, at the cost of an hour on the bus each way. For a week of glacier skiing, Neustift; for variety, Innsbruck.
