About Blue Mountain
Blue Mountain is Ontario's largest ski resort and one of the busiest in Canada, strung along the Niagara Escarpment just west of Collingwood, with Georgian Bay spread out below the top of the runs. It opened in 1941, and today it belongs to Alterra Mountain Company and is on the Ikon Pass.
By mountain standards the numbers are modest — about 220 m of vertical and runs of up to 1.6 km — but there are around 40 of them side by side along the ridge, with snowmaking covering almost all the terrain. Much of the mountain is lit for night skiing, so an evening session after work or school is part of the routine here.
At the base, the pedestrian Blue Mountain Village has the hotels, restaurants and shops, and lessons start a short walk from the village hotels.

Where lessons start
Blue Mountain is a comfortable place to learn: there are dedicated learning areas at the base, the easy runs are wide and well groomed, and you are never far from the village. Weekends and holidays fill up with day trippers from the Toronto area, so a midweek or evening lesson is noticeably quieter. Ontario winters are cold and changeable — dress in layers, and ask your instructor about conditions on the day.
Getting there
Toronto is about two hours' drive to the south-east, and Toronto Pearson is the nearest major airport. Collingwood, about ten minutes away, is the nearest town.
Qualifications required in Canada
Canada has no state teaching licence. The professional standard is the Instructor certification, and Alpine Pal shows what each instructor actually holds so you can judge it for yourself.
Find instructors in CanadaBlue Mountain: common questions
How far is Blue Mountain from Toronto?
About two hours by car, north-west of the city, and Toronto Pearson is the nearest major airport. That makes it Ontario's classic weekend and day-trip resort — which also means Saturdays and holidays are busy. Midweek days and evening sessions under the lights are the quiet times for a lesson.
Can you ski at night at Blue Mountain?
Yes — much of the mountain is lit, and on weeknights the lifts keep running into the evening; hours change through the season, so check the resort's schedule. Evening lessons suit children after school and adults after work, and the runs are usually quieter than on a weekend afternoon.
When is the ski season at Blue Mountain?
Usually from December to late March, depending on the weather. Snow blowing in off Georgian Bay helps, but Ontario winters bring thaws as well as cold snaps, and the resort leans on snowmaking that covers almost all of its terrain.
