Flachau is a broad, open village at 925 m in the Pongau district of Salzburg, sitting almost on top of the Tauern motorway, and it is best known for two things: Hermann Maier, who grew up here and whose career made it famous, and the World Cup night slalom held on its floodlit slope every January in front of tens of thousands of people.

On the mountain it forms Snow Space Salzburg with Wagrain and St. Johann-Alpendorf, around 120 km of linked piste rising to just under 2,000 m, and it is the central piece of Ski amadé — the largest lift-pass region in Austria, with more than 700 km of piste across 25 areas from Schladming to the Gastein valley on a single ticket. The pistes here are wide, long, mostly red and groomed to a standard that Austria is rightly proud of; the terrain is rolling and forested rather than dramatic, and the altitude is modest, so the resort leans heavily on snowmaking.

It is an efficient, uncomplicated, good-value place to ski, popular with German and Dutch families who drive down for the week, and it has no pretensions to being anything else.

Where lessons start

Flachau has gentle, wide nursery slopes right at the valley station, well separated from the main pistes, and the easy blues on the mountain above are broad enough to forgive a wobbly first week. It is one of the friendlier resorts in Salzburg for a beginner or a family, and the linked area is more than enough for an intermediate; the trade-off is that lower slopes can be man-made snow on a base of grass by March.

Getting there

This is probably the easiest Austrian resort to reach by car: the Flachau exit on the A10 Tauern motorway is minutes from the lifts, with Salzburg airport about an hour away and Munich around two. By train the nearest useful station is Radstadt, a short bus or taxi ride, or St. Johann im Pongau for the Alpendorf end. The one thing to know is that the A10 is the main route from Germany to the Adriatic and can crawl on peak Saturdays.

Qualifications required in Austria

Teaching skiing or snowboarding for payment in Austria is a regulated profession: an instructor must hold the Skilehrer qualification. Instructors listed as certified on Alpine Pal have either sent theirs to us for review or are vouched for by the ski school that invited them.
