Saalbach for nightlife, shops and the feeling of being at the centre of things; Hinterglemm for a quieter evening, slightly cheaper rooms and a more family-oriented atmosphere. The skiing is identical from either, since they sit on the same loop. If you want to avoid the après scene entirely, Leogang is over the ridge and feels like a different resort.

Saalbach and Hinterglemm are two villages a few kilometres apart in the Glemm valley, with lifts up both sides and pistes that link over the ridges into a single loop. Add Leogang over the northern ridge and Fieberbrunn, linked in 2015, and the Skicircus comes to around 270 km of piste — one of the largest areas in Austria — and a further gondola from Viehhofen connects it to Zell am See-Kaprun on the combined Alpin Card.

The skiing is the intermediate's ideal: an endless succession of wide, medium-length reds and blues, the sunny south-facing side above Saalbach for mornings and the north-facing Schattberg and Zwölferkogel for better snow in the afternoon. The villages sit at about 1,000 m and the top lifts reach just over 2,000 m, so the lower runs need the resort's extensive snowmaking in a mild winter. Fieberbrunn is the odd one out — a freeride venue on the Freeride World Tour, with the steepest and least-groomed terrain in the circus.

Saalbach's other reputation is for après-ski, which is loud, early and central to the place; Hinterglemm is slightly quieter and more family-oriented, Leogang quieter still. The valley hosted the Alpine World Championships in 2025, and the lift system was upgraded around it.

Where lessons start

Both Saalbach and Hinterglemm have nursery slopes at village level at the foot of the main lifts, and Hinterglemm's are the calmer of the two. The wide blues at the top of the sunny side are the natural next step, and there is so much gentle red that a second-week skier can spend the week exploring without ever feeling out of depth. It is a resort for intermediates and families; experts head to Fieberbrunn or hire a guide for the off-piste on the north-facing side.

Getting there

Salzburg airport is about an hour and a half by road, Munich two and a half, Innsbruck two. The nearest railway station is Zell am See, on the line from Salzburg, about twenty minutes down the road by bus. The Glemm valley is a dead end with one road in, and the traffic on changeover Saturdays is bad enough that the resort runs its own shuttle timetable around it.

Qualifications required in Austria

Teaching skiing or snowboarding for payment in Austria is a regulated profession: an instructor must hold the Skilehrer qualification. Instructors listed as certified on Alpine Pal have either sent theirs to us for review or are vouched for by the ski school that invited them.
