About Mount St. Louis Moonstone

Mount St. Louis Moonstone is one of Ontario's biggest ski hills and one of the few still run by the family that founded it. Josl Huter, a former Austrian ski racer, opened Mount St. Louis in 1964 and bought the neighbouring hill, Moonstone, twenty years later; the two now work as one resort on one ticket, and the Huter family still runs it.

The vertical is modest — about 170 m — but there are around 35 runs across the two hills, the longest about 2 km, with snowmaking on all of them and fast chairlifts, including an eight-seat chair on Moonstone. Much of the terrain is lit for night skiing, and the terrain parks have a loyal following.

It sits in Ontario's snow belt, just off Highway 400 near Coldwater, and most visitors treat it as a day trip from the Toronto area: up in the morning, home in the evening.

Where lessons start

There is dedicated beginner terrain, including a newer learning area with its own lift, and the snowmaking keeps the gentle runs in good condition. Mount St. Louis Moonstone is also home ground for many of Ontario's travelling snow schools — clubs that bring children up from the city for a weekly programme through the winter — so weekends are lively and weekday lessons quieter. Mount St. Louis Moonstone: common questions

How far is Mount St. Louis Moonstone from Toronto?

Around 90 minutes by car without traffic, just off Highway 400 north of Barrie — close enough for a day trip, which is how most people ski it. Many families come up with a club or travelling snow school instead, which takes care of the bus as well as the lessons.

Is there night skiing at Mount St. Louis Moonstone?

Yes — a large part of the terrain is lit. Evening hours vary through the season, so check the resort's schedule. A session under the lights is a good way to avoid the weekend daytime crowds, and it fits a lesson around a working or school day.
