About Naturland
Naturland is not an alpine ski resort, and it is worth being clear about that before anything else. It is Andorra's nordic station and mountain activity park, on the plateau of La Rabassa above Sant Julià de Lòria in the far south of the country, and it has no chairlifts or groomed downhill pistes in the sense the other three Andorran resorts do. Nobody should book an alpine lesson here expecting them.
What it has instead is the country's only cross-country ski trails — around fifteen kilometres of tracked loops when the snow is in — plus snowshoe routes, sledging slopes and a small snow area where children can have a first go on skis. The plateau sits at around 2,000 m, high enough to hold snow when the valley below has none.
The park is open year-round: the lower site, Cota 1600, is the summer side, with the long Tobotronc alpine coaster through the forest, and the upper site, Cota 2000, is the winter one. It is a quiet, family-shaped place, and a good afternoon out for a group with non-skiers in it.

Where lessons start
What you can learn here is cross-country skiing — classic or skating, on the tracked loops of Cota 2000 — and snowshoeing, both of which suit complete beginners and both of which an instructor can teach in a morning. Equipment can be hired at the station. For alpine skiing or snowboarding, book at Grandvalira, Pal Arinsal or Ordino Arcalís instead: each is within about an hour's drive, and any alpine instructor listed for Andorra will be teaching there, not here.
Getting there
From Andorra la Vella, the main road south reaches Sant Julià de Lòria in about ten minutes, and from there a mountain road climbs to La Rabassa — allow around half an hour in total, more after snowfall, when chains may be needed on the upper stretch. The Spanish border at the bottom of the valley is only a few kilometres below Sant Julià, so coming from La Seu d'Urgell is a similar drive. Like the rest of Andorra there is no airport and no railway: Barcelona and Toulouse are about three hours by road.
Qualifications required in Andorra
Teaching skiing or snowboarding for payment in Andorra is a regulated profession: an instructor must hold the Ski instructor title. Instructors listed as certified on Alpine Pal have either sent theirs to us for review or are vouched for by the ski school that invited them.

Can you ski downhill at Naturland?
Not in the resort sense. Cota 2000 at La Rabassa is Andorra's nordic station: cross-country trails, snowshoe routes, sledging and a small children's snow area, without the lifts and groomed downhill pistes of an alpine resort. For alpine lessons, book at Grandvalira, Pal Arinsal or Ordino Arcalís, each about an hour away by road.
What do I need for a first cross-country lesson at La Rabassa?
Less than for alpine: light boots, narrow skis and poles, which can be hired at the station, and clothing you can move in — cross-country is a workout, so layers rather than a padded ski jacket. The plateau at around 2,000 m holds snow better than the valley, but how many loops are tracked depends on the season, so check what is open before booking and agree a start time with your instructor.
