About Ordino Arcalís

Ordino Arcalís is the one Andorran resort that skiers travel for rather than stumble into. It is the highest and most northerly of the three, largely north-facing, and it holds cold snow after a storm longer than anywhere else in the principality.

That is exactly why the Freeride World Tour keeps coming back: the terrain above the lifts is steep, open and consistently good, and the resort has built a reputation among people who care about snow quality rather than piste kilometres. It is separate from Grandvalira and much smaller — you come here for the conditions, not the size.

Where lessons start

There is a beginner area and it works, but this is not the obvious place to learn — the mountain's character is in the terrain a first-timer cannot use. If someone in the group is starting from zero and someone else wants powder, Pal Arinsal for the lessons and Arcalís for the powder day is the honest split.

Qualifications required in Andorra

Teaching skiing or snowboarding for payment in Andorra is a regulated profession: an instructor must hold the Ski instructor title. Instructors listed as certified on Alpine Pal have either sent theirs to us for review or are vouched for by the ski school that invited them.

Ordino Arcalís: common questions

Do I need a guide for the off-piste at Arcalís?

For anything beyond the marked runs, yes — and an instructor who knows the mountain is the sensible way to do it. The terrain is genuinely avalanche-prone, conditions change fast on a north face, and the good lines are not obvious from the lift. Agree the plan in the chat before booking so the instructor can say honestly whether the day suits it.
