About Pamporovo
Pamporovo lies in the pine forests of the western Rhodopes, at about 1,620 m, some 85 km south of Plovdiv and 15 km from Smolyan. It is a resort of hotels among the trees rather than a village, and its landmark is the TV tower on Snezhanka (1,926 m), the summit where the main lifts meet.
The skiing is gentle and well groomed: depending on the source, about 30 to 37 km of pistes, most of them easy or intermediate, over a vertical of around 450 to 500 m. Snowmaking covers almost all of it — the operator put it at 97–98% in 2025 — and the long green Tourist run from the summit is one of the longest beginner runs in Bulgaria. The exception is The Wall, a short, steep black run.
The lift pass can also cover Mechi Chal above Chepelare, ten kilometres away, with a ski bus between the two, and the operator planned to start replacing the old single chair between Malina and Studenets with a four-seater in April 2026.

Where lessons start
Pamporovo is one of the best places in Bulgaria to learn. The ski schools gather at the two main ski centres, Malina and Studenets, with ski kindergartens for small children at Malina and at the Kamelia hotel, and the long, easy runs from Snezhanka give a beginner real distance once the first turns are in place. For steeper ground, The Wall, or Mechi Chal in Chepelare on the same pass.

Getting there
Plovdiv airport is the closest, about an hour and a half by road through Chepelare. Sofia airport is about 260 km away, three and a half to four hours, and many package flights still land there. Buses between Plovdiv and Smolyan run along the same road.
Qualifications required in Bulgaria
Teaching skiing or snowboarding for payment in Bulgaria is a regulated profession: an instructor must hold the Ski teacher licence (ски учител). Instructors listed as certified on Alpine Pal have either sent theirs to us for review or are vouched for by the ski school that invited them.
Find instructors in BulgariaPamporovo: common questions
Is Pamporovo good for beginners?
It is one of the best places in Bulgaria to start. Most of the runs are easy, groomed and snowmade, the ski schools work from Malina and Studenets, and the long Tourist run from Snezhanka lets a beginner ski top to bottom. Confident skiers may find it small after a few days, which is when Mechi Chal in Chepelare, on the same pass, earns the ski bus ride.
Can you ski Pamporovo and Chepelare on one pass?
Yes. Pamporovo and the Mechi Chal ski area above Chepelare, about 10 km apart, can be skied on one lift pass, and a ski bus runs between them. Mechi Chal has the longer runs and the bigger vertical, about 700 m against Pamporovo's 450 to 500 m.
