About Vitosha
Vitosha is the mountain at Sofia's back door: its ski area spreads around the Aleko hut, at about 1,800 m, less than an hour by road from the city centre. Bulgaria's first ski lift opened here in January 1954, and the Vitoshko Lale run was built for the 1983 Winter Universiade. The mountain is a nature park, the oldest in the Balkans.
The area is modest: about 20 km of pistes between roughly 1,500 and 2,270 m, served by fixed-grip chairlifts and drag lifts. The two Vitoshko Lale chairs serve the longest run, which is floodlit for night skiing midweek; Mecha Polyana and the Uchebna training slope suit beginners, and the higher Vetrovala sector and a snowpark open when there is enough snow.
Getting up is the weak point. The Simeonovo gondola, a 6.3 km cabin lift from the edge of the city, stopped in 2024 amid a long dispute between the lift owner, Sofia Municipality and the state, and in January 2026 it was still out of service with technical problems; the older chairlifts from Dragalevtsi and Knyazhevo had closed before it. For now you drive up or take bus 66.

Where lessons start
Lessons start on the gentle Mecha Polyana and Uchebna slopes by Aleko, which suit first days and children. Vitoshko Lale is the next step and, being lit in the evening, makes an after-work lesson possible. The season here depends much more on natural snow than in the big resorts, and not every lift runs every day, so check what is open before you go up.

Getting there
Aleko is less than an hour by road from the centre of Sofia, up through Dragalevtsi or Simeonovo, and the city's bus 66 runs up to the Aleko hut. Sofia airport is across the city, on its eastern edge.
Qualifications required in Bulgaria
Teaching skiing or snowboarding for payment in Bulgaria is a regulated profession: an instructor must hold the Ski teacher licence (ски учител). Instructors listed as certified on Alpine Pal have either sent theirs to us for review or are vouched for by the ski school that invited them.
Find instructors in BulgariaVitosha: common questions
Is the Simeonovo gondola running?
Not at the moment. The cabin lift from Simeonovo to Aleko stopped in 2024 and was still out of service with technical problems in January 2026, and the older chairlifts from Dragalevtsi and Knyazhevo had closed before it. Drive up, or take Sofia's bus 66 to Aleko, and check the operator's announcements before a lesson.
Can you ski on Vitosha in the evening?
Yes, when the snow allows. In January 2026, night skiing on Vitoshko Lale 1 ran from Tuesday to Friday, from 6:30 to 10 pm. That makes Vitosha the place for an after-work lesson in Sofia.
