About Val Thorens
Val Thorens sits at 2,300 m, the highest resort village in Europe, at the head of the Trois Vallées — the largest linked ski area in the world, around 600 km of pistes shared with Courchevel and Méribel.
That altitude is the whole proposition. It opens in November and runs into May, its snow is reliable when everything below it is struggling, and glaciers hang above the resort. The price is that there is not a tree in sight: when the weather closes in, the visibility goes completely flat, and there is nowhere to hide from wind.
It is a purpose-built resort, so it is functional rather than pretty, but everything is ski-in ski-out and nothing involves a car once you arrive.

Where lessons start
The beginner areas are right at village level, which at 2,300 m means they hold snow all season — a genuine advantage over resorts whose nursery slopes turn to grass in March. Because the whole resort is compact and pedestrian, meeting an instructor is trivial. Ask about flat-light days: with no trees, an instructor who knows which pitch still reads in poor visibility changes the lesson completely.

Getting there
Chambéry, Lyon and Geneva all serve the Tarentaise; Geneva is the busiest for transfers at around three hours. The train goes to Moûtiers, from where it is a bus up the valley — a good option on a Saturday when the road is at its worst. The final climb is long and switchbacked; if you drive, winter tyres are compulsory.
Qualifications required in France
Teaching skiing or snowboarding for payment in France is a regulated profession: an instructor must hold the Professional card (diplôme d'État de ski). Instructors listed as certified on Alpine Pal have either sent theirs to us for review or are vouched for by the ski school that invited them.

Is Val Thorens worth it if the snow is bad elsewhere?
That is exactly when it is worth it. At 2,300 m with north-facing terrain and glaciers above, it holds a season that lower resorts lose. In a poor winter the Trois Vallées concentrate into the Val Thorens end, which does mean busier lifts — but skiing, rather than looking at grass.
