About Alagna Valsesia

Alagna is a Walser village — the German-speaking community that settled these high valleys in the Middle Ages — and it is the steep entrance to Monterosa Ski. For a long time it had barely any pistes at all, and its reputation was built entirely on off-piste.

It remains one of the great freeride destinations in the Alps: long, serious descents from over 3,000 m, and a mountain culture to match.

Where lessons start

This is not where you learn to ski. It is where you learn to ski off-piste, and only with someone qualified: the terrain is genuinely avalanche-prone and the descents are long and committing.

Getting there

Milan is around two hours, Turin about two and a half, up the Valsesia.

Qualifications required in Italy

Teaching skiing or snowboarding for payment in Italy is a regulated profession: an instructor must hold the Maestro di sci, registered in the regional albo. Instructors listed as certified on Alpine Pal have either sent theirs to us for review or are vouched for by the ski school that invited them.

Alagna Valsesia: common questions

Can I learn to ski in Alagna?

It is the wrong place for it. Alagna is the steep freeride entrance to Monterosa Ski, with few groomed pistes and long, committing descents from over 3,000 m in avalanche-prone terrain. What it is for is learning to ski off-piste with someone qualified — a guide or an instructor with freeride credentials — once you already ski well. A beginner in the same group is better based in Champoluc, on the same pass.
