Cortina d'Ampezzo is the grandest address in Italian skiing: an elegant valley town that hosted the 1956 Winter Olympics, returned as a venue for 2026, and has been where Milanese and Venetian society goes to ski for a century.

The skiing is spread over three areas that do not link on snow — Tofana, Faloria-Cristallo and Lagazuoi-Cinque Torri — connected by ski bus. That is a genuine inconvenience and worth planning around, but the setting compensates: the Tofane, the Cristallo and the Cinque Torri are among the most dramatic rock architecture in Europe, and the pistes run right underneath them.

Cortina sits on the Dolomiti Superski pass, which puts twelve valleys and 1,200 km of linked skiing within reach for anyone willing to drive a little.

Where lessons start

Socrepes, on the Tofana side, is the beginner area and it is a good one: broad, sunny and well away from the fast traffic coming down from above. Because the three sectors are separate, agree with your instructor which one you are meeting at — getting this wrong costs a bus ride, not a chairlift.

Getting there

Venice is about two hours and is the usual airport; Treviso and Innsbruck are alternatives. Cortina has no railway station, so the last stretch is always road, and the Dolomite passes can close in heavy snow.

Qualifications required in Italy

Teaching skiing or snowboarding for payment in Italy is a regulated profession: an instructor must hold the Maestro di sci, registered in the regional albo. Instructors listed as certified on Alpine Pal have either sent theirs to us for review or are vouched for by the ski school that invited them.
