About Alto Campoo

Alto Campoo sits under the Tres Mares peak, so called because the water falling on it drains to three different seas — the Cantabrian, the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. It is the sort of fact that turns out to be true and is worth knowing on the chairlift.

The resort is Cantabria's only one, open and treeless, and on a clear day you can see the coast from the top. Being this close to the sea also means the weather can turn from perfect to unskiable quickly.

Where lessons start

Open terrain with room to learn, and the base area is straightforward. The variable is the weather, not the mountain — a local instructor will tell you honestly whether the day is worth the drive.

Getting there

Santander is around an hour and a half, via Reinosa. Palencia and Burgos are around two.

Qualifications required in Spain

Teaching skiing or snowboarding for payment in Spain is a regulated profession: an instructor must hold the Técnico Deportivo en Deportes de Invierno (TD1/TD2/TD3). Instructors listed as certified on Alpine Pal have either sent theirs to us for review or are vouched for by the ski school that invited them.

Alto Campoo: common questions

How do I know if Alto Campoo is worth the drive today?

Check the day, not the calendar. The resort is open and treeless and close enough to the sea that the weather can go from perfect to unskiable in a morning; the trade is that on a clear day you see the coast from the top. A local instructor will tell you honestly whether the day merits the hour and a half from Santander, and the base area is simple enough that a lesson starts as soon as you arrive.
