About La Molina
La Molina has been in the business of teaching people to ski since 1943, longer than anywhere else in Spain, and it shows in how the mountain is laid out: the beginner terrain is generous, well separated and served by lifts that do not frighten anyone.
Linked with neighbouring Masella, it forms Alp 2500, around 100 km of pistes and the largest ski area in the Catalan Pyrenees. Its real advantage is proximity to Barcelona — an hour and a half by road, and reachable by train, which makes it the default first-time-on-snow resort for a large part of Catalonia.

I love the mountains and really enjoy teaching children to ski. My approach is entirely hands-on and tailored to them: we learn by playing and enjoying the snow right from the very start. I make sure they feel comfortable, safe and keen to come back the next day.
Where lessons start
The learning areas sit around the Alabaus and Trampolí zones near the base, wide and gentle, and there is enough of it that a group lesson and a private lesson are not fighting for the same slope. Because the resort is compact, meeting your instructor is simple — which is not true of the bigger Pyrenean resorts.
Getting there
Barcelona is about 90 minutes by car up the C-16 through the Cadí tunnel. Uniquely among Spanish resorts, there is also a railway station at La Molina on the Barcelona–Puigcerdà line, with a link to the slopes — the only Spanish ski resort you can genuinely reach without a car.
Qualifications required in Spain
Teaching skiing or snowboarding for payment in Spain is a regulated profession: an instructor must hold the Técnico Deportivo en Deportes de Invierno (TD1/TD2/TD3). Can you get to La Molina by train?
Yes, and it is the only Spanish resort where that is a serious option. The R3 line from Barcelona stops at La Molina, and a shuttle covers the last stretch to the lifts. Journey time is a little over three hours, so it works better for a weekend than a day trip.
Is La Molina good for a first time on skis?
It is one of the best in Spain for it. The resort has been teaching beginners for over eighty years, the nursery slopes are wide and properly separated from through traffic, and the whole place is small enough that you are not spending the lesson travelling.
