About Baqueira Beret
Baqueira Beret sits in Val d'Aran, the one Spanish valley that drains north into the Atlantic, and that single geographic fact explains most of what makes it different. Atlantic storms arrive here first and fullest, which is why Baqueira holds the most reliable snow in Spain and why the season runs longer than anywhere else in the Pyrenees.
The ski area spreads over three linked valleys — Baqueira, Beret and Bonaigua — for more than 160 km of pistes, most of it above the treeline on wide, open, north-facing slopes. It is big enough that a week here does not repeat itself, and varied enough that a family with a beginner and a strong skier can ski the same mountain without either being bored.
It is also the most expensive resort in Spain, and the busiest at Christmas and Semana Santa. Both are worth planning around rather than being surprised by.

Where lessons start
Most first lessons happen at Beret, and with good reason: it is a wide, gentle, high plateau where a beginner can work on a turn without a steep run-out waiting at the bottom, and it holds snow when the lower slopes have gone patchy. Baqueira 1500 has the village-level nursery area, convenient if you are staying in the resort and do not want the shuttle. Strong skiers usually agree to meet at Baqueira 1800, which is where the lifts to the serious terrain start.

Getting there
There is no easy way in, and that is part of why it stays good. The nearest airports are Toulouse (about 2 h 30) and Barcelona (around 4 h); Lleida-Alguaire is closer but has very few flights. The road in from the south comes through the Vielha tunnel, which keeps the valley open in weather that would close a pass. Winter tyres or chains are a legal requirement on the approach after snowfall.
Qualifications required in Spain
Teaching skiing or snowboarding for payment in Spain is a regulated profession: an instructor must hold the Técnico Deportivo en Deportes de Invierno (TD1/TD2/TD3). Is Baqueira Beret good for beginners?
Yes, provided you learn at Beret rather than trying to keep up on the Baqueira side. Beret's plateau is one of the best beginner areas in the Pyrenees — wide, gently angled and served by easy lifts. The caveat is the same as at any large resort: you are paying for 160 km of terrain you will not touch in your first week.
When does Baqueira Beret have the best snow?
Late January and February, as a rule. The Atlantic storm track is most active then, and the north-facing aspect keeps what falls. March can be excellent too but is more variable. Avoid the Christmas fortnight if snow quality matters more to you than atmosphere — the base is often still building.
Where should I meet my instructor at Baqueira?
Agree it in the chat before the lesson — the resort is spread across three valleys and the wrong meeting point costs half an hour. The two that work for almost everyone are the main ticket office at Baqueira 1800 and the base chairlift at Beret. If you are a beginner, Beret is almost always the right answer.
