Q: Where should I stay to ski Astún?

Jaca is the usual base: a real town about half an hour down the valley, with hotels, restaurants and its citadel, which suits a family far better than a resort car park. There is a little accommodation at the base of Astún itself and in Canfranc on the way up. If the group splits between skiers and non-skiers, Jaca is the answer.

Astún was built from scratch in the 1970s in the bowl next to Candanchú, and the contrast between the two is what makes the pair work. Where Candanchú is old, steep and scattered, Astún is compact, sunny and modern, with everything grouped at the base and the runs fanning out above it.

The two share a joint ticket, so a week here really means two mountains with very different characters, twenty minutes apart on the same road.

Teaching skiing or snowboarding for payment in Spain is a regulated profession: an instructor must hold the Técnico Deportivo en Deportes de Invierno (TD1/TD2/TD3).
