About Dragobrat

Dragobrat lies on the Svydovets massif, in the Rakhiv district of Zakarpattia, about 13 km above the village of Yasinia. With its lifts between about 1,400 and 1,700 m it is the highest resort in Ukraine, and the only one where most of the skiing is above the treeline. The first building went up in 1956 and the first tourists came in the late 1990s. It is not one resort but a cluster of hotels and lift companies on the same slope, with about 10 km of runs on some thirteen lifts, almost all of them drag lifts.

The height gives it snow: in a good winter the season runs from November well into spring, longer than anywhere else in Ukraine, although in 2025/26, a poor winter, it closed on 27 March. There is no snowmaking, so it depends on natural snow, and the open slopes catch the wind and the fog. It is known for freeride: snowcats take riders up to Zhandarmy, Blyznytsia and Stih. The lifts need electricity: in the winter of 2025/26 one of them ran only when there was power.

Where lessons start

Beginners start on two short learning lifts, of about 220 and 260 m, and a baby lift at the foot of the slope; the school of the Drahobrat complex takes children from three years old. Nearly every other lift is a drag lift, which takes some practice of its own, so a first lesson usually includes learning to ride one. Freeride on Stih and Blyznytsia is for strong skiers, with a guide who knows the avalanche conditions.

Getting there

The tarmac ends at Yasinia, which has the nearest railway station: the last 10 km or so up to Dragobrat are a rough track, and most people take one of the local four-wheel-drive taxis, a ride of 30 to 40 minutes; in February 2026 a return trip for two cost about 1,600 hryvnias. In the 2025/26 holidays Ukrzaliznytsia ran a seasonal train from Kyiv to Rakhiv through Yasinia. By road Yasinia is about 120 km from Ivano-Frankivsk.

Qualifications required in Ukraine

Ukraine has no state teaching licence. The professional standard is the Ski or snowboard instructor certificate (інструктор), and Alpine Pal shows what each instructor actually holds so you can judge it for yourself.

Dragobrat: common questions

Can you drive to Dragobrat?

Not in an ordinary car. The road ends at Yasinia, and the last 10 km or so are a rough track for four-wheel drives; most visitors leave the car in Yasinia and go up in a local 4x4 taxi, which takes 30 to 40 minutes.

Is Dragobrat good for freeride?

It is the best known place for it in Ukraine. Above the treeline the slopes are open, and snowcats take riders up to Zhandarmy, Blyznytsia and Stih. That terrain is not patrolled like a piste: go with a guide or an instructor who knows the avalanche conditions, and with the right equipment.
