About Les Deux Alpes
Les Deux Alpes has an unusual shape: a village at 1,650 m with a glacier at 3,600 m directly above it, and comparatively little in between. That gives it the largest skiable glacier in Europe, snow certainty at the top all season, and one of the few French summer skiing operations.
The inversion has a consequence worth knowing: the best snow and the beginner terrain are both up on the glacier, not at village level, so a first lesson starts with a lift ride. The run home to the village is long and, late in the season, patchy.

Where lessons start
Learn on the glacier, not in the village. The terrain up there is wide, gentle and reliably snow-covered even in April, and the gondola down at the end of the day means a beginner never has to ski the long descent home. Tell your instructor if you would rather ride down — it is completely normal here.
Getting there
Grenoble about an hour and a half, Lyon about two and a half. It is one of the closest big resorts to a major city, which makes it popular for short trips and busy at weekends.
Qualifications required in France
Teaching skiing or snowboarding for payment in France is a regulated profession: an instructor must hold the Professional card (diplôme d'État de ski). Instructors listed as certified on Alpine Pal have either sent theirs to us for review or are vouched for by the ski school that invited them.

Where do beginners learn in Les Deux Alpes?
Up on the glacier, not in the village. The terrain up there is wide, gentle and reliably snow-covered even in April, and at the end of the day a beginner can ride the gondola down rather than ski the long descent home. Tell your instructor and they will plan the lesson around it.
Does Les Deux Alpes have summer skiing?
Yes. With the largest skiable glacier in Europe at 3,600 m, it is one of the few French resorts with a summer operation. In winter that same glacier keeps the snow at the top certain all season; the run home to the village at 1,650 m is the part that can get patchy late on.
