About Métabief
Métabief is the main alpine ski resort of the French Jura, on the slopes of the Mont d'Or near the Swiss border. On a clear day the view from the top takes in the whole Alpine chain from the Jungfrau to Mont Blanc, which is a considerable return on a modest climb.
The Jura is limestone rather than granite, lower and gentler than the Alps, and it is above all cross-country country — the Grande Traversée du Jura runs nearby.

Where lessons start
Gentle and manageable for a first week, with the nordic trails as a serious alternative — in the Jura that is the main event rather than a sideline.
Getting there
Besançon is around an hour, Lausanne about the same across the border.
Qualifications required in France

Is Métabief better for alpine or cross-country skiing?
Both work, but in the Jura cross-country is the main event. The alpine slopes on the Mont d'Or are gentle and manageable for a first week, with a view of the whole Alpine chain on a clear day, and the Grande Traversée du Jura runs nearby. Besançon and Lausanne are both about an hour away.
