About Oberwiesenthal
Oberwiesenthal sits on the Fichtelberg in the Ore Mountains, on the Czech border, and is the highest town in eastern Germany. It has produced an extraordinary number of Olympic champions for its size — the local sports school has turned out world-class nordic and sliding athletes for decades.
A cable car has run to the summit since 1924, and a narrow-gauge steam railway still serves the town.
