About Zugspitze
The Zugspitze is Germany's highest mountain at 2,962 m, and the glacier below its summit is the only genuinely snow-sure skiing in the country — it opens earliest and closes latest by a wide margin.
Getting up there is half the experience: a cogwheel railway through the mountain or a cable car with one of the longest free spans in the world. From the summit terrace you can see four countries.

Where lessons start
The glacier terrain is gentle and open, and the snow is reliable when everything else in Germany is bare. Dress for altitude — it is a different climate from Garmisch below.
Getting there
Munich is around an hour and a half to Garmisch, then the cogwheel railway or cable car up.
Qualifications required in Germany
Germany has no state teaching licence. The professional standard is the Staatlich geprüfter Skilehrer, and Alpine Pal shows what each instructor actually holds so you can judge it for yourself.
Find instructors in GermanyZugspitze: common questions
How do I get up to the Zugspitze glacier?
From Garmisch-Partenkirchen, either by the cogwheel railway that tunnels through the mountain or by cable car, one of the longest free spans in the world. Munich is around an hour and a half to Garmisch by road, and there is a direct train. Allow time: the ride up is half the experience, and from the summit terrace you can see four countries.
Is the Zugspitze good for beginners?
Yes — the glacier terrain is gentle and open, and the snow is reliable when everything else in Germany is bare, which makes it the safest bet for a lesson early or late in the season. At nearly 2,700 m it is a different climate from Garmisch below, so dress for altitude and wind. The area is small, so a full week is better split with Garmisch-Classic.
